The Philadelphia Phillies made a major signing over the weekend, securing the return of co-ace Aaron Nola on a seven-year, $172 million contract.
It’s a sizable commitment for the 30-year-old pitcher, but it guarantees that the Phillies rotation has some talent over the short and long-term.
The deal will pay Nola $24,571,428 every year from 2024 to 2030 and includes some bonuses and perks.
“Aaron Nola, Phillies: $172,000,000/7. $24,571,428 – 2024-2030. $50K for All Star, $100K for Cy Young ($50K-2nd; $25K-3rd), $50K for Gold Glove, $50K for LCS/MVP, $100K for WS/MVP. Plus: $1M if traded prior to end of 2025 *Acquires 10/5 veto rights in 2025,” MLB insider Jon Heyman tweeted.

Even a third-place finish in future Cy Young races will trigger bonuses for Nola, as well as League Championship Series and World Series MVP awards.
To compete with the powerhouses in the National League, the Phillies need a top rotation.
As a team, they are at their best when Zack Wheeler and Nola are at their best.
That’s why they needed to keep the duo together for a long time.
The Phils do need more pitchers, and that’s why they are said to be in the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes.
But keeping Nola around for the long-term was a must.
Nola started his career with the Phils in 2015 and has a 3.72 career ERA in regular-season play.
He has been a frontline starter for them in the dark years, and then when they started to really compete again.
There is a chance Nola gets to retire with the Phillies, and there is no better feeling than loyalty.
