At 61-101, the Chicago White Sox were one of four MLB teams with 100 losses or more in the 2023 campaign.
It was a disastrous year after going 81-81 in 2022.
Evidently, there is a lot of work to do at all levels to make the franchise great again.
The farm system is not particularly good, the existing MLB talent is not ready to compete, and the player development and scouting situations are a bit murky.
In the meantime, the White Sox are making some changes to their coaching staff.
“The Chicago White Sox are hiring Marcus Thames as hitting coach, according to sources familiar with the situation,” MLB insider Robert Murray tweeted.
Murray also reported that: “Drew Butera is also a strong candidate to join the Chicago White Sox coaching staff, sources say. He spent last season as the Angels’ bullpen catcher.”

Thames was a hitting coach in the New York Yankees organization from 2016 to 2021.
He filled that role with the Miami Marlins in 2022 and with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023.
As an MLB player, he hit 115 home runs and accumulated 301 RBI.
He has accumulated a lot of experience in his craft and will now try to help an organization that isn’t having its best days.
As for Butera, it isn’t clear if he will join the Sox and what role he will fill, but he is a strong candidate to join and has experience as a bullpen coach.
That has been his position with the Angels since 2022.
The White Sox want to see some improvement in 2024, but they are probably not ready to contend yet.
