The Atlanta Braves are playing chess this offseason while other teams are playing checkers.
They have not been overly active in free agency, but they have made a bunch of smaller trades.
Atlanta has been a part of a few trades this offseason where their main goal was to flip the players they acquired.
According to Danny Vietti, the Braves have acquired five players this offseason that they have immediately moved elsewhere.
Vietti also mentioned that the Braves did this for roster and financial flexibility.

Acquired Marco Gonzales from SEA
Traded Gonz to PITAcquired Max Stassi from LAA
Traded Stassi to CHWAcquired David Fletcher from LAA

It is interesting to see the Braves making these smaller moves without doing anything to truly improve their team.
Last season, the Braves were undoubtedly the best team in the regular season.
But, for the second straight season, they got knocked out in the NLDS by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Atlanta had the best lineup in baseball, but that lineup went cold when it mattered the most.
The one interesting trade the Braves made was acquiring Jarred Kelenic from the Seattle Mariners.
Kelenic was once a top prospect but has struggled to flourish at the MLB level.
Atlanta now has a chance to help Kelenic return to the form that made him a top draft pick and prospect.
Once again, the Braves should be atop the league next season.
But they still need to make a few moves in free agency to strengthen their roster.
The National League has gotten much tougher with some of the moves made by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If the Braves are serious about contending they will be aggressive in free agency.
