For the first time in two decades, the New England Patriots might not have Bill Belichick on the sidelines.
As crazy as it may sound, all things come to an end, and it just feels like the Pats are due for a big change.
The Patriots signed Belichick to a contract extension in the offseason, so whoever wants him will most likely have to trade for him, and finding suitors for one of the greatest coaches of all time shouldn’t be a complicated task.
However, Robert Kraft and company cannot say the same.
They’ve set the standard for what a winning organization should look like, and replacing Belichick might be one of the biggest challenges he’s ever had to face since being in charge of the franchise.
With that in mind, NFL insider Jonathan Jones revealed that former LB and current assistant Jerod Mayo is currently the top internal candidate to take the reins of the team if they, indeed, choose to go that direction.
Nonetheless, he also states that it’s unclear whether Kraft wants to promote someone from the inside or look somewhere else:
“Jerod Mayo is the top internal candidate, but no one knows if the Krafts would go internal. And the Krafts have never had to hire a GM in the three decades in New England,” Jones wrote.

Mayo has been touted as Belichick’s heir-apparent for quite a while now, and he recently admitted his desire to become a head coach one day.
It would be quite odd to watch the Patriots and not have Belichick out there.
But with Don Shula’s record still on the horizon, we can rest assured that the legendary coach won’t be without a job for long.
