Just a couple of years ago, it seemed like the New England Patriots had found Tom Brady’s successor.
Mac Jones was no Brady — obviously — but he looked poised to have a long and successful career in Foxborough.
Fast forward to today, and he might not even have a future as a starter in the league.
HC Bill Belichick has had enough of him and is reportedly set to start backup QB Bailey Zappe next week against the Los Angeles Chargers.
And according to a report by Mike Giardi, the Alabama product is struggling mightily to deal with that.
On Mac Jones, talked to a pair of team sources. One said he’s “emotionally and mentally beat up. He’s poured everything into it, so to get this little out of it is exhausting.” Another added Mac has been “pressing” and is “beat up.”

Giardi reports that Jones is emotionally and mentally beat up after pouring everything into the season.
He adds that he’s exhausted, frustrated, and pressing.
Notably, his colleagues often raved about Jones’s leadership and work ethic, so everybody knows he’s worked hard to try to be better.
But some reports state that he’s even lost the locker room at this point, and there’s simply no turning back from that.
Jones’ body language on the field is just off.
His mechanics are broken, and so is his confidence.
Perhaps the worst part about this is that the Patriots are to blame for this.
Bill Belichick stood in the way of his development last season when he had Matt Patricia calling plays for him, and his failure to scout, recruit, and/or develop talent and surround him with the players he needs is also responsible for this.
Bill O’Brien hasn’t done a good job at putting together an offense around his strengths, either.
Jones isn’t as bad as he’s looked this season, but he might never recover from this.
