The Philadelphia Phillies want to be competitive every season they take the field.
After coming up just shy of the World Series the past two seasons, the Phillies are hungry to get over the hump.
One player who will help them get there is starting pitcher Zack Wheeler.
He is one of the best starting pitchers in the sport and the ace of the Phillies’ rotation.
The Phillies decided it was time to reward Wheeler with an extension.
According to Buster Olney, the Phillies extended Wheeler with a three-year, $126 million deal.
That is the highest annual salary of any contract extension ever.

It was a deal the Phillies had to get done.
Wheeler has been great for the Phillies and should remain a part of the team for the rest of his career.
Last season, Wheeler was once again one of the best in baseball.
He threw 192.0 innings with an ERA of 3.61.
Also, he struck out 212 batters on the season.
His efforts were good enough for a sixth-place finish in the NL Cy Young voting.
Wheeler is entering his age-34 season this year.
But, many pitchers have aged well throughout their careers.
The hope is Wheeler will do the same.
It is always good to avoid contact negotiations during the season.
That is why the Phillies getting this out of the way now is perfect.
Wheeler gets a well-deserved contract and no longer has to worry about his future with the team.
The hope is Wheeler will play a significant role in the Phillies’ success this upcoming season.
