For most of recent history, the New England Patriots have always been a bit of a mystery when it comes to the NFL Draft.
HC Bill Belichick ran a tight ship and a military-like system, and with him being in charge of all decisions, the chances of something getting leaked were pretty close to zero.
But with de facto GM Eliot Wolf and new head coach Jerod Mayo now in charge, there have been more rumors and reports about their plans.
With that in mind, Patriots insider Albert Breer already has some projections about what they may do with the No. 3 pick.
According to Breer, the Patriots are almost a lock to go with UNC star QB Drake Maye, with J.J. McCarthy most likely going to the Minnesota Vikings — who could trade up with the Los Angeles Chargers — at No. 5 (via The Purple Persuasion).
According to @AlbertBreer, after all the intel he’s heard the last few weeks, he predicts the #Patriots to stick at pick No. 3 and select Drake Maye.

This isn’t much of a surprise, all things considered.
Maye has been penciled in as the No. 3 pick for most of the NFL Draft process, and he makes the most sense for a quarterback-needy team like the Patriots.
He might need to sit for a year or two, and the Patriots could afford that, given that they have a seasoned veteran like Jacoby Brissett there to help him, mentor him, and be their stopgap.
Maye’s accuracy and mechanics raise some concerns, but he’s got the physical traits and tools to become an elite two-way player once he gets a hold of the NFL game.
He’ll have some big shoes to fill.
