The Boston Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom a few weeks ago, before the end of the 2023 regular season.
That marked the start of an intense search period: the organization looked at several candidates to be the major decision-maker in the baseball department for a potential contender.
Many of these candidates rejected the Red Sox, probably because they felt Bloom didn’t deserve to be fired and feared a similar fate down the road.
However, they finally found the right man for the job, or at least that’s their hope.
It’s former MLB pitcher Craig Breslow, who had two stints with the team when he was an active player.
“Official: Former Yale baseball player and big league reliever Craig Breslow will be Chief Baseball Officer for the Boston Red Sox,” MLB insider Chelsea Janes tweeted.

Breslow has been universally acclaimed as one of the smartest men in baseball during his playing days.
After retiring in 2018, the Chicago Cubs made Breslow their Director of Strategic Initiatives for Baseball Operations in January 2019.
He worked alongside former Cubs executive Theo Epstein before he left for the league’s office.
Late that same year, in October, he was promoted to the position of Director of Pitching/Special Assistant to the President and General Manager.
Since November 2020, Breslow has been the Cubs’ Assistant General Manager/Vice President, focused on pitching.
Those who have been around him say that his intelligence is evident.
If anything, his background analyzing pitching and using modern equipment to do so gives the Red Sox hope about player development in the future, especially from the mound.
This is an interesting hire who has all the look of a “boom or bust” type.
