While he may not be the most popular figure among NFL fans, it seems like Commissioner Roger Goodell won’t go away any time soon.
According to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN, Goodell has officially received a three-year contract extension that will run through March 2027.

The 64-year-old has been in charge of the league for 17 years now.
Now, he’s reportedly set to have an incentive-laden deal, and while the financial details weren’t disclosed, it’s expected to be the most lucrative contract for a Commissioner in major sports history.
Goodell reportedly made almost $64 million in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons alone.
Notably, this is the fourth time that the Commissioner has had a contract extension, with the priors coming in 2009, 2012, and 2017.
He took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006 after working his way up from an administrative intern in 1982.
His legacy will always be tied to the league’s financial outburst of the past two decades.
He signed a collective bargaining agreement that has grossed the league over $100 billion with ESPN, FOX, CBS, NBC, and Amazon, not to mention his deal with YouTube for the Sunday Ticket package.
Team values have also gone way up during Goodell’s stint.
The Washington Commanders were recently sold for a record $6.05 billion, ten times more than the Minnesota Vikings’ value when Goodell took over.
Even so, he’s not exactly beloved among fans, and the players have often called him out for the league’s reluctance to ban turf and some of the offense-friendly rules enforced every year.
