After two forgettable seasons with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson leading the charge under center, the Denver Broncos and head coach Sean Payton decided to cut their losses and move on by releasing the one-time Super Bowl champion.
With the team moving on from Wilson, the Broncos now have a significant void at the quarterback position, with Jarrett Stidham presumably being the starter moving forward unless the team has plans to bring in another quarterback to compete for the job.
Currently, the Broncos own the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, which means the team could select a fairly talented young quarterback to back up Stidham or compete for the starting job moving forward.
However, Payton and the Broncos brass have been unclear about their intentions heading into next month’s draft regarding which position they’ll prioritize at No. 12.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Payton firmly believes he’s going to develop a quarterback, which could hint at drafting a quarterback in the draft, via “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“Sean Payton legitimately believes that he’s gonna find a Quarterback or develop a Quarterback..
He didn’t trade for Russell Wilson and he didn’t give Russell Wilson that contract”@AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/PVrm36ciND

Although Payton wants to develop a quarterback, that might not mean he’s going to draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft, even though that might be the smart move with that player being a rookie deal.
However, as Schefter said, Payton seems fond of Stidham and might be able to make it work with him in the years to come, as long as there’s enough talent around him to develop.
It’ll be interesting to see what direction Payton and the Broncos go from here.
