There are a ton of moving parts in the quarterback market this draft season, with so many teams still in need of a franchise guy and more big names than ever before moving up the mock draft boards.
USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, and UNC’s Drake Maye could be the first four names called in April, though no one has any idea in what order or what teams will be in the top four, although one insider is saying one team could push to make a big move up.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there’s “belief among some teams” that the Minnesota Vikings are interested in trading up for former North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to the Falcons this offseason and so far in free agency have signed Sam Darnold to a one-year, $10 million deal, so quarterback is still a big need.
Darnold isn’t the long-term answer and the Vikings are armed with picks 11 and 23 in the first round.
They have more ammo to trade up than most teams, and might not have to go too far if reports of McCarthy leapfrogging Maye in mock drafts are true.
The Cardinals at No. 4 and the Chargers at No. 5 would be the most logical spots to move to, as there could be a feeding frenzy to get ahead of the QB-needy Giants, who currently hold the No. 6 pick.
Fowler added that many execs believe Maye has the most upside of any QB in the draft.
Maybe it’s a smokescreen, or maybe this draft really will be as chaotic as we all hope for.
