The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a huge win over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC title game Sunday thanks to it’s defense and the play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs offense only mustered 17 points in the win but did enough to advance to their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons.
More impressive, though, was that Kansas City survived the loss of guard Joe Thuney, who missed the conference title game with a pectoral injury.
There was hope he could play this past weekend and/or in the Super Bowl, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday that Thuney’s injury should sideline him for the Super Bowl in two weeks as well and that the team is considering surgery.
“It’s not a strain, it’s a torn pec he’s dealing with,” Schefter said. “The overwhelming chances are that they’ll be without him for the Super Bowl.”

This would be a big blow to the Chiefs’ offensive line, as Thuney has been a stabilizing presence all season long.
Fortunately his backup, Nick Allegretti, stepped in and performed admirably against the daunting Ravens defense.
Mahomes operated just as well as he did with Thuney on the line, and it appears as though the team was comfortable enough with Allegretti’s play that they may not need Thuney to rush back from injury – even against another tough opponent in the San Francisco 49ers.
Kansas City has dealt with considerable adversity this season, and this new wrinkle to their year only adds to the legacy of the Mahomes-led Chiefs.
