The Las Vegas Raiders were going nowhere during the 2023 NFL season and their loss in Week 8 prompted owner Mark Davis to make the moves that its fanbase had been clamoring for.
Davis fired general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels after the Raiders fell to 3-5.
Both Ziegler and McDaniels were brought in to help establish the “Patriot Way” in Las Vegas, but that experiment failed spectacularly.
It was clear that the organization needed a change as the locker room seemed to finally splinter under McDaniels.
With McDaniels no longer around, the team decided to name linebackers coach Antonio Pierce as the interim head coach.
According to Jay Glazer of FOX, Las Vegas had a team meeting that essentially forced Davis’ hand.
“Before firing Josh McDaniels, the Raiders had a team meeting where players directed their frustrations at McDaniels, and unloaded on him,” Glazer said.

McDaniels took exception to Pierce bringing up the New York Giants beating the New England Patriots in the 2007 Super Bowl and it seems his loyalty to his previous franchise is what ended up costing him his job.
Pierce, by all accounts, is beloved by the players in the locker room and seems to already have their buy-in despite never having been a head coach himself.
For now, it seems as though Pierce will be allowed to prove that he’s worthy of being the team’s head coach beyond this season.
Pierce can make a strong case for his candidacy if the Raiders can reel off some wins the rest of the year.
