The New England Patriots made sure to get a clean slate at quarterback.
They traded Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and brought back a proven veteran in Jacoby Brissett.
Even before they took Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft, he was firmly expected to be their placeholder and hold down the fort.
Now, with the first-round pick on the team as well, it’s more than evident that he’s not going to be there for the long run.
Nonetheless, that’s not an issue for a seasoned veteran like him.
When asked about that situation, Brissett claimed that competition brings out the best of everybody, adding that he was excited about getting to work with him (via Mike Reiss and Carlos Talks Pats on Twitter).
Jacoby Brissett on mentoring #Patriots rookie Drake Maye:
“That’s all out of my control. I don’t really worry about that. I’m excited to have him on the team… Competition brings out the best in all of us — I’m excited about that part.”

Brissett is a respected figure around the league, and he’s a guy who knows his place.
He’s trying to uplift a younger and more promising player, as opposed to being hostile to him or treating him as someone trying to take his job.
He’s there to help the team stay competitive to the best of his capacities, all while Maye sits behind him and learns the ins and outs of the NFL game and whatnot.
Maye has a sky-high upside and might end up being the next big thing in the AFC East, but he’s not ready to be thrown into the fire just yet.
Of course, the Patriots might not exactly compete for a postseason berth in 2024, but they know that success wasn’t built overnight, and they need someone to mentor their young quarterback while he gets ready for the pros.
