Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots were expected to take a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick, but few knew exactly who they’d target once they were officially on the clock after the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders made their selections at No. 1 and No. 2.
Ultimately, the Bears went with Caleb Williams, which was expected, and the Commanders brought in Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, leaving the Patriots to draft Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina.
It was either going to be Daniels or Maye, but either way, the team knew they’d have a talented young quarterback to develop to potentially be the new face of the franchise in New England.
With the Patriots coaching staff recently able to work with Mayo, new head coach Jerod Mayo gave his assessment of what he’s seen from the rookie thus far and admitted there’s a lot to work on moving forward via The Coachspeak Index.
“He has a lot to work on,” Mayo said. “He has a lot to work on, but I have no doubt that he’ll put the time in.”

It seems as though things may have gotten off to a rocky start for Maye in New England, but everyone knew that the former Tar Heels star was anything but a finished product.
Only time will tell whether Maye is the real deal and if he can resurrect this Patriots franchise back into the dominant force it once was with Tom Brady at the helm.
