The New England Patriots need things to go right for them this time.
Cam Newton wasn’t the same guy he was in his prime when he arrived in town, and they didn’t do a good job of developing Mac Jones.
That’s why they’re taking a different approach with Drake Maye.
Apparently, Maye is going to start the season as QB2 behind Jacoby Brissett, and there’s a big chance he won’t suit up at all in 2024.
However, that doesn’t mean he’s not putting in a lot of work.
Recently, HC Jerod Mayo praised him and gave him his flowers for his work ethic (via Carlos Talks Pats).
Jerod Mayo says #Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye is putting in extra work to get better.
“Drake did a great job, not only progressing on the field, but also off the field. You can already tell he’s gonna put in that extra work. I walk by the quarterback meeting room — he’s just in… pic.twitter.com/0AUyXqe15M

The first-year coach revealed that Maye was putting in a lot of work behind the scenes.
Besides his work on the field, he’s also watched a lot of film, which is obviously key to developing young quarterbacks.
Maye has some of the most impressive physical tools among young quarterbacks, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him become one of the next stars of the game.
Then again, he’s also very raw, and sending him out there to the field could only hurt him.
The Patriots need to take an old-school approach with their new franchise quarterback and make sure he’s ready by the time he takes the field.
So, even though things won’t get much better for them in 2024, they will build for the future and make sure that Maye has a legitimate chance to be Tom Brady’s heir, which is something they never gave his predecessor.
