Going into the offseason, one of the biggest questions facing the Dallas Cowboys was what are they going to do about Dak Prescott’s next contract.
Prescott had a strong 2023 NFL season and is in the final year of his current deal, meaning he’s in for a major raise.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged there’s a possibility the two sides agree now, though he said they also could decide to wait until next year.
Should something fall apart between now and then, though, Dallas does have a serviceable backup option in Trey Lance.
The Cowboys took a swing on trading for Lance after he had fallen out of favor with the San Francisco 49ers.
Jones on the other hand had nothing but good things to say about him via Jon Machota of The Athletic.
“Arrow’s really up,” Jones said. “He’s every bit a…he’s exceeded expectations as a person, as a worker, he’s got character, he’s got unique skills.”

Although Lance appeared sparingly last season, his work behind the scenes has impressed people like Jones and members of the coaching staff.
By all accounts, he’s a mature person who handles situations well and doesn’t panic.
With Prescott still in front of him on the depth chart, Lance will need to wait either for an injury or if another opening somewhere in the league pops up.
Jones probably wouldn’t trade away Lance considering what it took to get him, so for now he’ll likely have to continue trying to work his way up in the background.
