Any long-time NFL fan and certainly any follower of the Indianapolis Colts is hardly surprised by Monday’s announcement that Dallas Clark will be inducted into the franchise’s Ring of Honor.
Clark, who epitomized both sure hands and the toughness expected from his position, played for nine seasons with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2003.
The inductee holds all major franchise records for his position, and this honor is well deserved.
Colts owner Jim Irsay declared that Clark, who was respected both on and off the field, would be immortalized by Indianapolis in the coming fall season.
As Irsay noted, the tight end in 2024 is “so much more dynamic and important to the offensive side of the football.”
A game-breaking tight end. Our all-time franchise leader in receptions and TDs for that position. One of the toughest men I’ve ever seen play the game. And the epitome of a Colt off the field. And much of the credit for the position’s evolution goes to the Super Bowl champion and new honoree.
Clark will become the 19th member of the Colts’ Ring of Honor, joining among others the man who connected with him for just about every pass he hauled in while wearing the horseshoe – Peyton Manning.
Many credit Clark with helping revolutionize a position that was dominated by run blockers until recent times.
As for his team’s Super Bowl run, Clark paved the way with a pair of 100-yard performances in the 2006 playoffs.
His efforts included hauling in 137 yards of receptions against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship to propel the Colts to the Lombardi Trophy.
Manning celebrated the news of Clark’s induction by calling his former tight end an “incredible player and teammate.”
