With the Kansas City Chiefs morphing into the villains of the NFL, there was a sizable amount of fans and league personnel rooting for the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LVIII.
The 49ers were the best team in the NFC and had all the talent and coaching necessary to beat the Chiefs and win their first Super Bowl in decades.
However, San Francisco fell apart in the second half and overtime and Kansas City would go on to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
It was another sad chapter added to the 49ers’ postseason history and this recent loss was particularly heartwrenching because they were in control for most of the evening.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan can’t seem to get over the hump and his reputation for playoff meltdowns only got worse.
NFL great John Elway watched the Super Bowl like every other football fan and revealed who he was rooting for via Adam Schefter of ESPN.
“Obviously good friends with Johnny Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. Was rooting for them… I would much rather have given [the Lombardi Trophy] to the 49ers,” Elway said.
John Elway told @AdamSchefter he was “really hoping” the 49ers would beat the Chiefs.

Elway has several ties to the 49ers as their general manager John Lynch is a Denver Broncos Ring-of-Famer.
Meanwhile, Shanahan’s dad is legendary Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan while Christian McCaffrey’s dad Ed McCaffrey was one of Elway’s favorite targets.
Elway, like numerous others, would’ve loved to see a different team hold up the Lombardi Trophy, but unfortunately he and the rest of the league will have to watch the Chiefs celebrate for the second year in a row.
