In the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers made a big move in order to nab a man they thought would be their franchise quarterback of the future.
They traded a considerable amount of draft capital to obtain the No. 3 pick, which they used on Trey Lance from North Dakota State University.
For various reasons, Lance didn’t work out, and the 49ers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys last August.
General manager John Lynch admitted on “The Pat McAfee Show” that the organization had high hopes for Lance and that it still thinks he can become a good player, via Sterling Bennett.
#49ers GM John Lynch on the decision to trade Trey Lance:
“We had a vision with how we were going to play with Trey. Unfortunately, he got hurt a couple times…you have to ask what’s in the organization’s best interest and we still believe Trey can have a really good career…” pic.twitter.com/b3vurbcv1A

Lance mostly sat during his rookie season, but prior to the 2022 campaign, he was named the starter ahead of veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who had been San Francisco’s starter for several years.
Just when it seemed Lance was getting his chance to develop and shine, he suffered a severe ankle injury that ended his season.
The football gods can be cruel, and while it was a cruel twist of fate for Lance, it worked out for the Niners.
Garoppolo took over under center until he himself suffered a season-ending injury in Week 13, putting a rookie named Brock Purdy in the starting QB spot.
Purdy, the last player chosen in the 2022 draft, took the NFL by storm, and just like that, the Niners had found their franchise QB, albeit in a very unexpected way.
Lance is now behind Dak Prescott on the Cowboys’ depth chart, and with the uncertainty surrounding Prescott’s contract situation, one had to wonder if Lance could soon be starting under center in Dallas.
