After coming so close to winning last season’s Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers will take largely the same core to training camp this summer as they look to finally make good on their “quest for six.”
Brock Purdy has developed into the franchise quarterback they hoped former No. 3 overall draft choice Trey Lance would be, but quarterback depth is very important in the NFL, especially given how many players at that position have suffered major injuries in recent years.
San Francisco will have a new QB2 in Joshua Dobbs, and he said he wanted to be in a winning culture on a team that can play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, per NBC Sports Bay Area.
“It’s exactly what I want to be around,” Dobbs said. “At this stage of my career, I just want an opportunity to get to the dance in whatever aspect, whatever role that takes, just to taste it. And so to join a team that’s done it, my mentality is whatever I can do to help, get back there and then go from there.”

Dobbs started last season with the Cleveland Browns, the team he spent most of the 2022 campaign with, but he was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in late August.
After he started eight games for the Cardinals while they waited for starter Kyler Murray to recover from a torn ACL, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, who had recently lost QB1 Kirk Cousins to a torn Achilles.
For the season, he completed 62.8 percent of his pass attempts and threw for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Two seasons ago, the 49ers were in the unenviable position of losing multiple QBs to season-ending injuries.
Lance went down in Week 2, and his replacement, veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, got hurt in Week 13, paving the way for Purdy, then a rookie, to take over and take the NFL by storm.
Dobbs will replace Sam Darnold, the Southern California native who is now with the Minnesota Vikings.
