The NFL has become an offensive-driven league, and that’s not likely to change any time soon.
If anything, the league will continue to shape the rules in a way that favors scoring.
They do so because the fans seem to like high-scoring matchups and big highlight reels and defense isn’t as coveted as it used to be.
They also focus on player safety, which obviously leads to the rules being enforced on defensive players more often than on offensive players.
So, now that there’s a rumor that the league is looking to get rid of the hip drop tackle, defensive players aren’t happy at all.
That’s why new Chicago Bears safety Kevin Byard took a big shot at the NFL, stating that it’s hard to play defense in the league.

Notably, that has been a regular complaint among defensive players, but even some veteran offensive guys seem to agree.
Not so long ago, legendary QB Tom Brady stated that it was a quarterback’s job not to put his teammates in harm’s way, and it wasn’t up to the opposing team or the referees to protect the players.
Truth be told, it’s going to be hard to find a balance here.
Defensive players are getting all the blame, and it’s a fact that it’s become almost impossible to play defense without giving offensive players all the advantage.
At the end of the day, player safety should be first and foremost and the centerpoint of every discussion, but the sport as a whole might look completely different ten years from now.
