Last season was a disaster for the Minnesota Vikings, with the team failing to live up to expectations, finishing with a disappointing record of 7-10 while unable to clinch a spot in the NFL playoffs.
One of the main reasons for the team’s struggles last season was veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins going down with a season-ending Achilles injury, which virtually ended any chance of the Vikings making a run at the playoffs.
Along with Cousins being on the mend and ultimately playing his last game for the Vikings, Minnesota had to deal with the absence of superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who also suffered an injury that kept him off the field for a considerable amount of time.
In the aftermath of a disappointing 2023 campaign, the Vikings let Cousins walk in free agency, as he went on to sign with the Atlanta Falcons to be their new starter under center.
Fortunately for Minnesota, the team was able to land rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft, setting up a potentially bright future for the team with the Michigan product and Jefferson leading the way.
With Cousins moving on this offseason, head coach Kevin O’Connell was asked about replacing the veteran and only had kind words for the longtime Vikings starter, via “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

At this point in time, there’s no telling whether McCarthy can fill Cousins’ shoes right away in Minnesota or if it will take some time, and the same can be said for Cousins in Atlanta and if the Achilles injury has taken something out of the soon-to-be 36-year-old quarterback.
It’ll be interesting to see which of these two teams has the better season and is closer to competing in the NFC in 2024.
