Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Andy Reid’s team was known for it’s high-flying offense and explosive plays, but they used a different formula to get the job done last season.
Instead, Patrick Mahomes made the most of the weapons he had at his disposal, throwing short passes, keeping the chains in motion, and letting the defense lead them to safe haven.
Notably, that was very impressive, at least for Kurt Warner.
Recently, the former QB talked to Arrowhead Addict about how difficult it is to make that kind of adjustment.
Warner stated that he was a gunslinger who would rip the football down the field to put pressure on the defense, regardless of whether that translated into multiple interceptions.
Mahomes, on the other hand, realized that it was okay not to be the star in every game, so he didn’t force things and trusted his defense to get the job done.
Warner argues that it’s hard to realize that because all players have an ego and want to be the reason their teams win, and Mahomes might not be the exception to that rule.
At the end of the day, it’s all about winning, and no player can win on his own, not even the best quarterback in the game.
Now, the Chiefs will strive to become the first-ever team to win a three-peat in the Super Bowl era, and while Mahomes will be the most important piece in that pursuit, he’s mature enough to know when he has to take a backseat and let his defense do the heavy lifting.
