After going undefeated through the first five weeks of the 2023 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers suddenly find themselves in a bit of a slump as they dropped their second consecutive game this past week.
The 49ers lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, dropping them to 5-2 on the season and raising some questions about their Super Bowl viability.
San Francisco hasn’t looked the same offensively as they’ve been without Deebo Samuel, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, though Christian McCaffrey managed to score two touchdowns despite playing through a hurt oblique.
Brock Purdy has seemingly come back down to Earth as he hasn’t been able to find the same rhythm he’s shown since taking over as the starting quarterback.
Purdy was uncharacteristically sloppy with the football and committed two interceptions, with the second one sealing the 49ers’ defeat in the closing minutes.
Now Purdy’s status for Week 8 is up in the air as head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that he has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol, via Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Kyle Shanahan said Brock Purdy is now in concussion protocols.

This comes as a surprise as Purdy was able to finish the game against the Vikings, though reports said he was feeling concussion-like symptoms on the team plane.
With San Francisco set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, there’s a very real possibility that Purdy is forced to miss the game unless he is able to clear protocol in the coming days.
If Purdy is unable to go, Sam Darnold would presumably get the start in his place.
