On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the 2023 NFL season, with the undefeated squad led by Brock Purdy falling to the Cleveland Browns in Week 6.
Along with losing a game the team was heavily favored to win in Week 6, the 49ers suffered some costly losses on the roster, with two of their best offensive players going down.
The 49ers lost both Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel early in Sunday’s game against the Browns, which changed everything for San Francisco as they couldn’t get anything going offensively against the stout defense of Cleveland.
On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on the status of McCaffrey and Samuel, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan said RB Christian McCaffrey is undergoing an MRI on his oblique injury.
WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder) and LT Trent Williams (ankle) are considered day-to-day.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, these updates don’t indicate how much time McCaffrey, Samuel, and left tackle Trent Williams will miss due to the injuries they suffered.
Before going down with the oblique injury, McCaffrey was starting to make a strong case for NFL MVP, even though that’s an award that has gone to quarterbacks for the last decade straight.
The versatile back was doing everything on the football field, rushing for 550 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 23 catches for 177 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
As for Samuel, the 27-year-old continued to be productive as a receiver with 20 receptions for 302 receiving yards and a touchdown while adding 95 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Without these two offensive heavyweights, the 49ers could start to struggle, with a lot of pressure on Purdy to produce.
