The Washington Commanders already have their new general manager in Adam Peters but need to hire a head coach to help lead the roster construction for the 2024 season.
While the team interviewed several head coaching candidates already, the favorite to land the job is Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, according to BetOnline.ag (via Jaime Eisner).
This was the rumor after Peters landed the GM role, and now Johnson could be up for a head coaching role even as his Lions take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game on Sunday.
Updated odds to be next Commanders HC:
Ben Johnson (-150)
Raheem Morris (+225)
Dan Quinn (+400)
Bobby Slowik (+600)
Eric Bieniemy (+600)
Mike Macdonald (+900)
Mike Vrabel (10/1)
Jim Harbaugh (25/1)
Steve Wilks (40/1)#HTTC | @betonline_ag— Jaime Eisner (@JaimeEisner) January 23, 2024
Johnson helped curate one of the best offensives in the NFL this year with quarterback Jared Goff under center, two dynamic running backs in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, and two quality pass-catchers in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta.
Johnson was a hot head coaching candidate this past offseason as well but decided to remain in Detroit – a decision that paid off as the Lions won the NFC North and now sit one game away from the franchise’s first Super Bowl berth.
Whether or not this hire happens before or after the NFC title game remains to be seen, but Johnson could be headed to Washington following his success as a coordinator with Detroit.
He wouldn’t have nearly as good of a team, but the Commanders do have the No. 2 pick in the draft they could use on a quarterback and some quality offensive talent.
