Earlier this year, the Detroit Lions made a surprising decision to use their top pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft to select former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
It’s not that Gibbs isn’t talented, but not many expected him to even get drafted in the first round, let alone be one of the first 15 players selected.
So far this season, the rookie running back has shown some flashes of potential, but he’s been dealing with an injured hamstring, and he’s had to miss Detroit’s last two games because of the injury.
On Friday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed that Gibbs will be returning to the field this Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter).
Lions’ HC Dan Campbell told reporters that rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs will play vs. the Ravens and added this: “Certainly I think he’s going to need to take the load of (the work)….I’d like to say we’re going to be careful with him, but the reality is we need him.”

This is good news for Detroit, who lost their top running back, David Montgomery, to a rib injury last week, and he is expected to miss some time before he is healthy enough to get back on the field.
So, for the second time this season, Gibbs will get the start in the offensive backfield for the Lions, and according to Campbell, he’ll be getting the majority of the workload of all the running backs the team will have available on Sunday.
Detroit is coming off a 14-point win on the road over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Lions have yet to lose a game outside of their own building this season.
Despite their success on the road this year, getting a win in Baltimore still isn’t going to be an easy task.
Will the Lions remain unbeaten on the road and improve their record to 6-1 by beating the Ravens on Sunday?
