Currently, many believe Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels are the clear-cut top-three quarterback prospects in the 2024 draft pool, and many expect all of them to be drafted with one of the first 10 picks in April.
During the last few weeks, however, there has been more chatter about former Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy possibly coming off of the board with one of the first 10 selections in this year’s NFL Draft as well.
McCarthy just helped lead Michigan to a National Championship, and despite not being asked to carry the team with his arm, he’s had plenty of moments during his college career where he flashed the potential to be a productive quarterback at the next level.
Not everyone is on board with McCarthy as a top draft pick this year, and ESPN’s Louis Riddick believes one team in particular should stay away from the former Michigan quarterback (via Get Up on Twitter).
“If I’m the [New York] Giants, would I, at 6, pick J.J. McCarthy? No I would not.”
.@LRiddickESPN doesn’t believe the Giants should draft J.J. McCarthy at No. 6.
“I don’t care what you think his ceiling is, he is not going to excel in that environment. … He’s a notch below Jayden [Daniels] … Caleb [Williams] … Drake [Maye].” pic.twitter.com/8wNGuqdSLj

Riddick went on to explain that his thinking isn’t a knock on McCarthy, but essentially, the Giants just aren’t really equipped at this moment for a rookie quarterback to excel.
The ESPN analyst also mentioned that one of this year’s top quarterback prospects, Drake Maye, would even have a tough time succeeding in New York next season based on how their roster is currently set up.
This could be true, but the Giants could also draft one of the top signal-callers this year and sit him for a season behind Daniel Jones.
So, probably don’t rule out New York drafting a quarterback in April just yet.
