The Las Vegas Raiders have undergone significant changes over the past year.
Their flurry of changes started with a massive quarterback switch, as longtime starter, Derek Carr, moved on to the New Orleans Saints.
Carr’s departure was met with mixed signals from the fanbase, but regardless of their opinions, the team needed to find a new option for the position.
Jimmy Garoppolo began the year as their starter, but after his injury, it was up to rookie Aidan O’Connell to take the reins.
O’Connell had some challenges throughout the year, but he did make an impression on the interim head coach, Antonio Pierce.
Pierce has since been promoted to head coach, and will likely give O’Connell more opportunities to start next season.
He’s not the only coach to express his feelings about O’Connell.
Luke Getsy is the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator, and, in a recent conversation with Vic Talfur of The Athletic, said, “Without even knowing him or talking to him about anything yet, I could tell you right now that guy has got to be someone that prepares his butt off and is a great teammate.”

Whether O’Connell is the team’s long-term answer remains to be seen.
He will, at the very least, be an option for them to start the year, which is all the young QB can ask for.
Judging by Getsy’s comments, however, there could be competition for the starting job if the Raiders end up drafting a quarterback.
Barring a trade, the Raiders have the No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft.
If they feel that O’Connell is not the guy, they could trade up, hoping to find someone to be their answer at the position.
If they are confident in O’Connell, they could still draft a quarterback, but wait their turn, seeing what prospect falls to them at 13.
