The Miami Marlins, despite losing Jorge Soler and other contributors, haven’t really made much noise in the 2023-24 offseason.
They just added three pieces that project to be part of their bench: Vidal Brujan, Christian Bethancourt, and Nick Gordon.
They are, however, interested in adding a shortstop via free agency.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, they already made an offer to a potential starter there.
“The Marlins have offered Tim Anderson a contract to be their primary shortstop, source confirms. Anderson, 30, has made all but 2 of his @MLB starts at shortstop; he played 2B in the WBC. Credit to @Ken_Rosenthal for being first to report the team’s offer,” he tweeted.

Anderson, who is 30 years old, once looked like the shortstop of the future for the Chicago White Sox.
After a few mediocre seasons to open his MLB career in 2016, 2017, and 2018, he peaked in 2019-21.
In those three years, that coincided with the White Sox’s contention window, he was always an .800+ OPS hitter and hit .300 or better all three years.
He started declining again in 2022, and hit rock bottom in 2023: he slashed a disappointing .245/.286/.296 with just one home run, 13 stolen bases, and a .582 OPS in 493 plate appearances.
His power evaporated, his OBP was one of the lowest in the league, and his contact ability looked diminished.
To be fair, he was limited by a sprained knee, but it was by far the worst year of his career.
The Marlins have a chance at signing him to a bargain contract to help him re-establish some value, but chances are Anderson, if signed, will be a below-average regular.
