With the NFL Draft getting closer by the day, the media scrutiny is only going to get worse for the prospects.
Notably, that has helped J.J. McCarthy gain a lot of ground in the process, but that hasn’t been the case with Drake Maye.
Originally projected to be the No. 3 selection — and to go as high as No. 2 on some big boards — he’s now losing momentum, and could even be the fourth quarterback taken in the draft after Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and the aforementioned McCarthy are off the board.
However, NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. still loves what he’s seen from the UNC product.
Talking on ESPN’s “Get Up,” he stated that it’s not about the player that Maye is right now but about the player he could become if he goes to the right situation.
.@MelKiperESPN believes Drake Maye could be “special” if he sits for his first year in the NFL.

He believes that he should sit for a year like Patrick Mahomes did, as there are still some things to tweak about his game, but the potential and the talent are most definitely there.
Notably, that used to be the rule back then.
Quarterbacks were rarely thrown into the fire right away, and some sat out for years before being able to make an impact.
That’s not the case anymore, as teams want the players to be there for longer and want them to be younger and ready right out of the gate.
That has led to many players failing to reach their potential, and organizations should do a better job of developing their quarterbacks, just like the Green Bay Packers did with Jordan Love.
Hopefully, whoever gets Maye will give him the patience and time he needs to be at his best.
