We’re just hours away from the 2024 NFL Draft.
Some scouts believe that as many as six quarterbacks could be taken in the first round, and while there are clearly some better prospects than others, there’s been a frenzy about who might end up getting who.
Nonetheless, former NFL player Merril Hoge isn’t as excited as the average fan and analyst.
As a matter of fact, he believes that the only elite quarterback prospects in this class are Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.
Notably, he’s definitely not a fan of J.J. McCarthy.
Talking to Tom Curran, he claimed that McCarthy shouldn’t be a first-round pick, adding that he was just okay (Via Justin Spiro).
“Those are the guys that get you fired.”
Merril Hoge says J.J. McCarthy is not worthy of a 1st round pick and will lead to the demise of a front office selecting him.@merrilhoge

He added that getting guys like him or Drake Maye are the kind of decisions that gets people fired and sets organizations back years, stating that the New England Patriots would be better off by taking Marvin Harrison Jr. instead.
McCarthy wasn’t deemed an elite prospect at the beginning of the process, and he’s now expected to be a top-five or top-ten selection.
Of course, the chances of all five or six quarterbacks taken in the first round being good are slim, and someone’s going to look back to this draft and acknowledge that they made a mistake.
Unfortunately, the only way to know that is by taking a chance and hoping things work out.
