Ever since it was known that USC superstar quarterback Caleb Williams would be making the jump to the NFL level this year, the consensus has been that no matter who owned the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he’d be the first player off the board come April 25.
With the 2023 NFL season now in the books, the consensus remains the same, as all signs point to the Chicago Bears trading quarterback Justin Fields in order to pave the way for Williams to become the team’s new franchise quarterback in the Windy City.
Although everything seems to be pointing to the Bears bringing Williams in with the top pick in the upcoming draft, not everyone is giving all praise to the Trojans superstar, with Merril Hoge critical of the promising young quarterback’s pocket presence, via “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”
“From a pocket presence perspective, he’s not special,” Hoge said of Williams. “That might be the one thing that hinders him more than anything.”

Despite criticizing his pocket presence, Hoge said that Williams’ accuracy is elite, which is rare to see from a college quarterback coming into the NFL, and it is a trait that puts him above everyone else in this draft class.
The real question now is whether the Bears will go all-in on Williams or run it back again with Fields and trade the top pick for a massive trade haul, which will likely be unprecedented.
Only time will tell if Williams lands in Chicago or somewhere else.
