When the New York Mets lost five consecutive games to open the 2024 MLB season, panic started taking over one of the most loyal fan bases in baseball.
After their mediocre 2023 campaign and with a new manager, it was okay to be scared about the future, especially after dropping the first five.
But Carlos Mendoza didn’t panic, and neither did Steven Cohen, David Stearns, or the talented Mets roster.
They knew that if they kept playing to the best of their abilities, wins would eventually come.
And boy, did they come.
After winning emphatically against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 9-1 score on Wednesday, the Mets’ record, once 0-5, is now at 10-8.
They have taken four straight games, six of the last seven, and 10 of the last 13.
“Put it in the books. The @Mets sweep Pittsburgh and have won 10 of 13!,” MLB tweeted.

Pittsburgh was equally red-hot, and the Mets swept them, just like that.
Mendoza’s team is playing with a high level of confidence right now, and pending the Atlanta Braves’ result on Wednesday in their game against the Houston Astros, the Mets are just two games behind them in second place of the NL East.
Remember, this is without ace Kodai Senga, designated hitter J.D. Martinez, and with Francisco Lindor struggling to get going.
New York has an interesting mix of young contributors (Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez, Jose Butto, and others) and steady veterans (Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, Jose Quintana, Pete Alonso, Jorge Lopez, Starling Marte, Luis Severino and others), and still have injured stars nearing their returns, plus some really good prospects.
It could be a good year for them with some luck, and if they play their hand right.
