The New York Mets haven’t made much noise in the offseason when it comes to major free agents.
It’s not like they haven’t tried, though: they were among the finalists in the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes and offered him $325 million.
They have made some moves, though: they brought in Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Adrian Houser, Joey Wendle, Harrison Bader, Jorge Lopez, and Austin Adams.
They could potentially compete in 2024 if some things break right, even though that wasn’t their priority.
If they want to be competitive this upcoming season, there is a relief option they should, and actually (reportedly) are, considering: Hector Neris.
“The Mets have spoken with Héctor Neris’ representatives as they continue to look at bullpen options, per @martinonyc. Neris is said to be seeking a one- or two-year deal at $7-11 million per season,” SNY Mets tweeted.

The fact that the Mets are interested in adding Neris, who had a 1.71 ERA last year with the Houston Astros, makes sense: they want to improve their bullpen around Edwin Diaz.
However, the report conflicts with a recent one about Neris’ asking price.
It was previously believed that Neris was looking for a three-year, $50 million deal.
If SNY is right, his demands are much lower.
If that’s the case, the Mets certainly will have competition from teams with a much more concrete chance of competing in 2024.
There is still some time for Neris’ market to develop, especially now that the big chip in the bullpen landscape, Josh Hader, has already signed his deal.
