The New York Mets are in the process of building a competitive team.
When they tore things apart ahead of the deadline and traded valuable veterans, they implied that they were targeting contention somewhere around 2025-2026.
With new president of baseball operations David Stearns in town, they have the look of a team that will try to return to contention as soon as possible, probably in 2024.
They still haven’t made any major moves, even if they are heavily courting Japanese starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
However, they made a minor move that could prove very important to protect leads late in games.
“The Mets are reportedly signing reliever Kyle Crick to a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring training. Crick holds a career 3.56 ERA across 194 MLB appearances in six seasons,” SNY Mets tweeted.

Crick, who turned 31 this week, has been a solid middle reliever during his career as his 3.56 ERA suggests.
His control issues have likely affected him enough to prevent him from consistently closing, though, and he has given up 30 walks in 40 innings in the last two seasons (2021 and 2022).
He didn’t pitch at all at the MLB level in 2023.
He has spent most of his career on non-contending teams such as the Pittsburgh Pirates and the 2022 Chicago White Sox.
Perhaps a move to the Mets, a team with more resources and more prepared people and coaching, can help him get his career back on track and win a spot on the major league roster.
It’s a nice gamble to take by New York.
