The Pittsburgh Steelers have revamped their quarterback room ahead of the upcoming season.
They cut ties with Mitch Trubisky, let Mason Rudolph go, and traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In their place, they’ll have Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
That should make for an interesting competition for the starting quarterback spot.
Nonetheless, for now, it seems like there’s a clear-cut favorite to be the starter by the start of the season.
According to a report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, head coach Mike Tomlin reached out to Russell Wilson when the news of the Justin Fields trade broke to let him know that he was the starter.
Speaking of Justin Fields and the #Steelers trade, coach Mike Tomlin reached out to Russell Wilson last night when the trade was going down to let him know he was the starter. @TomPelissero said it last night, and Tomlin views that as the plan. Fields will compete, regardless.

Apparently, that was always their plan, although they will give Fields a chance to compete.
Truth be told, this might be what both of these players need.
Wilson was overlooked, mocked, and scapegoated, and he’ll now have a fresh start somewhere else.
Fields, on the other hand, was never given a chance to succeed, and his value around the league took a massive hit as a result.
So, even though Wilson has an edge in this race for now, he has to play well, or he’s going to be benched, perhaps for the remainder of his career.
If not, they can at least hope that Fields will get better and develop under a former Super Bowl champion for a year, and then take the reins of the offense.
For now, it’ll be Russell Wilson’s spot to lose.
