The MLB playoffs have been full of great games and many surprising results.
The top seed in the AL, the Baltimore Orioles, trail 2-0 in their ALDS series.
Likewise, the Los Angeles Dodgers trail 2-0 in their NLDS series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
There seems to be a direct correlation between how successful a team has been in the playoffs and their home run totals.
According to Sarah Langs, teams to out-homer their opponents are 9-1 so far in the postseason.
Also, 45.8% of the runs scored in the playoffs have come via the home run.
so far this postseason:
– Teams to score first are 12-4
– Teams to out-homer opponents are 9-1 (22-6 last PS)
– 45.8% of runs have been scored via HR (was 41.0% in ’23 RS, 46.8% in ’22 PS)— Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) October 10, 2023
Hitting home runs has become a major part of the game.
One of the best home run-hitting teams of all time is the Atlanta Braves.
They hit 307 home runs this season which tied the 2019 Minnesota Twins for the most in a season.
Currently, the Arizona Diamondbacks are leading the playoffs in home runs.
They have hit nine in four games, which is a big reason why they are undefeated in the playoffs.
If you want to find the most successful teams in the playoffs, look for the teams that hit the most home runs.
It is quite surprising that the Dodgers only have one home run in their first two games.
They have seemingly run into a buzzsaw in the Diamondbacks who are launching the ball with ease.
We still have a long way to go in the playoffs.
But, this October has already shown us that the best regular-season teams do not always win.
Instead, it is the teams that are playing the best who will advance.
