The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2024 offseason with a big decision to make.
For the second offseason in a row, they needed to decide whether to retain Chris Jones or cut their losses and move on.
After looking at what Jones has meant to this team over the past several years, including during their Super Bowl runs, the team didn’t want to let him go.
They signed him to a five-year extension, tying him to the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
While Chiefs fans rejoiced over this highly-anticipated signing, it almost didn’t happen, as Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor recently indicated.
He appeared on the KC Sports Network and said, “You have the Los Vegas Raiders to thank for Chris Jones signing a contract.”

Jones reportedly had many suitors in the offseason, and if the Chiefs hadn’t presented the best possible offer, he likely would have moved on.
For players in today’s NFL, money talks, and if they don’t feel like they are being paid what they are worth, they can switch teams, even though they might have been extremely loyal to their former team.
It would have been tough on the fanbase to see Jones suit up for another team, especially the Raiders, their division rival.
Jones has been one of the NFL’s best defenders for several years and is frequently mentioned in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation.
The Chiefs might lose other defenders throughout free agency, and while those losses might sting for a time, nothing would have compared to the loss of Jones.
