The Tampa Bay Buccaneers loved what they saw from Baker Mayfield in his first season in Florida.
They loved it so much that they didn’t hesitate to break the bank to give him a very lucrative multi-year deal in the offseason.
On top of that, they made sure to get someone he felt comfortable with to be his new offensive coordinator.
With Dave Canales leaving to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, they hired former Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen to take the reins.
He was the Rams’ OC when they claimed Mayfield off waivers two seasons ago, and that brief stint together actually saved Mayfield’s career.
So, now that they’re back together and Mayfield is in a completely different situation, Coen believes he’s found a ‘calm confidence’ (Via ProFootballTalk):
“There’s not many days, I don’t think, Baker wakes up and he doesn’t have a chip on his left shoulder,” Coen said in his press conference. “But there is definitely a feeling that this is his team and it’s OK to fail. It’s OK. Go out there and let it rip and be yourself every single day no matter what because you’re going to be the guy and we believe in you. And I think that’s something that, ultimately, he just hasn’t really had the opportunity to have all that often in his career.

Per Coen, Mayfield always has a huge chip on his shoulder, but he knows it’s also okay to fail because this is his team now, adding that he has a great relationship with the offensive line.
Confidence has never been an issue for Mayfield.
If anything, it actually rubbed some in the Cleveland Browns organization the wrong way when he first entered the league.
And even though he’s been through several humbling experiences throughout the course of his career, he still sees himself as the former No. 1 pick and one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
He’s coming off the best season of his career, throwing for 4,044 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 picks, and now, he has to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.
