Every NFL player is talented, which means every NFL coach has a gifted roster of individuals to work with.
The trick, of course, is for that coach to maximize the talent they bring to the field and win championships.
Zach Azzani is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new wide receivers coach, and he sees a highly talented young man in his corps who can take a step toward greatness.
George Pickens is a third-year player out of Georgia and has already put together two impressive seasons in Steeltown.
But his new mentor believes he can do much more.
“It’s right there for him,” Azzani said. “He’s just got to pick it up and take the cheese, do the things we asked him to do and he can do anything he wants. He’s that talented.”
Pickens brushed aside the sophomore slump by hauling in 63 passes for an impressive 1140 yards in 2023.
Despite a shaky quarterback situation in Pittsburgh, Pickens led the league with a sterling 18.1 yards per catch average.
The 23-year-old has already established himself as the team’s go-to receiver, and now he should benefit from having a rejuvenated Russell Wilson throwing passes his way.
Azzani joked that Ray Charles could see the potential in Pickens, who had proven himself to be the leader of the wide receiver corps.
However, successful coaches know that the key is to wring as much effort out of talented players as possible, and Azzani is making sure that Pickens gets the message loud and clear.
That’s how stars become superstars and how teams come together and win championships.
