The St. Louis Blues’ forward, Zachary Bolduc, is feeling the sting of a hefty fine after his on-ice actions during a recent game against the Nashville Predators. Bolduc’s checkbook has been hit with a $2,248.26 penalty, the most severe financial punishment allowed under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
This disciplinary action stems from an incident that unfolded in the third period of the Blues’ 4-1 triumph over the Predators. Bolduc was seen delivering a series of cross-checks to the backside of Nashville’s defenseman, Nick Blankenburg, who was already down on the ice. The incident was sparked by Blankenburg’s attempt to land an open-ice hit on Blues’ centre Robert Thomas, which resulted in a tripping penalty due to the majority of the hit missing its target.
While Bolduc’s actions resulted in him receiving a major penalty and a game misconduct, the league decided against issuing a suspension. This decision has been met with relief and appreciation from Thomas. Speaking to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Thomas commended Bolduc’s courage and commitment, stating, “He’s a guy that’s really exploded, really feeling comfortable. He’s playing amazing hockey. He’s playing the right way. It was nice for him to stick up for me, and I definitely owe him.”
Bolduc’s impact on the game, however, extends beyond his defensive actions. In this victorious match, he recorded one assist, one shot on goal, and two hits, contributing significantly to the Blues’ win. This performance aligns with his season-long achievements, during which the 22-year-old centre has tallied 14 goals and 15 assists equating to 29 points in 62 games.
The Blues, with Bolduc still in their lineup, are set to face the Montreal Canadiens at home on Tuesday. As they move on from this incident, Bolduc’s actions and the league’s response serve as a reminder of the thin line that players tread between aggressive play and crossing into unacceptable conduct.
