The Pittsburgh Steelers have made moves to acquire two different quarterbacks during the offseason.
After landing both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, the Steelers sent a message that they were going in a different direction.
The team ended up trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he is expected to be Jalen Hurts’ backup.
While he might be the QB2 on paper, Nick Sirianni made sure to clearly define his role, as reporter Brooks Kubena highlighted.
Sirianni said, “I’m really excited about the things he can do. I’m excited that we have a plan in place there. But his job is to be the backup, and his job is to support Jalen and help him in any way that he can and be ready to play if he needs to play.”
Nick Sirianni on Kenny Pickett:
“I’m really excited about the things he can do. I’m excited that we have a piece in place there. But his job is to be the backup, and his job is to support Jalen and help him in any way that he can and be ready to play if he needs to play.”

This is an indication that Sirianni cares about Pickett’s development.
He wants to see Pickett succeed in this league and will seemingly give him every opportunity to do so.
While this is the case, he also wanted to ensure that Pickett knows that he is the backup.
The team has invested a lot into Jalen Hurts over the past few seasons, and they have built up and crafted this team around him and his skill set.
It might be tough for Pickett to get any traction at first, but if he learns from Sirianni and Hurts, he could turn into a player that other teams want on their roster.
He has already learned some skills from Mike Tomlin, and being on another team gives him that much more opportunity to develop.
