The Cleveland Browns had plenty of reasons to be optimistic going into this season, but now they’re in a world of trouble.
During Monday night’s marquee matchup versus their heated AFC North rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, they lost star running back Nick Chubb for the season to a knee injury, and just like that, their hopes of making noise in the playoffs all but vanished.
But the contest also revealed another legitimate concern for Cleveland — the play of quarterback Deshaun Watson.
He completed just 22 of 40 passes and had one touchdown pass and one interception, giving him a meager 70.3 passer rating for the night.
Nick Wright detailed just how poorly Watson played in the Browns’ 26-22 loss and said on his show that they made one of the worst decisions in NFL history by trading for him and giving him a huge new contract shortly afterward.
“Deshaun Watson was playing a team with -7 fourth quarter yards, and Deshaun was the worst QB on the field. … The dead cap, after this year, would be $200M. After next year, it’s $135M. The whole salary cap is like $240M. He is uncuttable. And he’s terrible.”

The Steelers’ pass rush thoroughly frustrated Watson, and he was sacked six times as he couldn’t find a remedy.
Through the first two games of the 2023 campaign, he has a completion rate of 55.1%, two touchdown passes, two interceptions, and 69.1 passer rating.
Watson sat out all of the 2021 season after he asked the Houston Texans to trade him, and he missed the first 11 games of last season while serving a suspension that stemmed from the numerous sexual misconduct allegations made against him.
At this point, saying that he still needs to shake off the rust that accumulated from his time off the field is starting to seem like an invalid excuse, and the six draft picks, including three first-rounders, Cleveland gave up to get him are starting to look costly.
