Before the start of the 2023 season, the Cincinnati Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow agreed to a massive five-year contract extension worth $275 million.
Since Burrow signed that extension, he’s been dealing with a nagging leg injury, and he’s been playing like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL through the first four weeks of the season.
Some are even wondering if the Bengals should consider benching Burrow because he’s been performing so poorly this year, and FS1’s Nick Wright is among those who believe this is something Cincinnati should definitely be thinking about.
“Of course [they should sit Joe Burrow]! He’s been the worst QB in the league, and I don’t think he is… You’ve got your franchise quarterback, you are putting him in jeopardy, and he’s not helping. This is franchise malpractice. You are getting none of the benefit and all of the risk.”
Should the Bengals sit Joe Burrow?

As Wright pointed out, Burrow currently ranks 32nd in the NFL with a 57.6 completion percentage, he ranks 34th in yards per pass attempt with 4.8, he ranks 29th with 182 passing yards per game, and he ranks 34th in passer rating with an abysmal 69.1 rating.
Something is clearly wrong with Cincinnati’s franchise quarterback, and no one really knows when things are going to get back to normal.
Are the Bengals going to have to wait until next season for Burrow to return to his elite form, or will he end up returning to a high level of play at some point in the near future?
Whenever it happens, Cincinnati needs to figure out a solution fast, as they currently only have one win after their first four games this year.
Right now, the 2023 Bengals don’t resemble anything close to the teams that made the AFC Championship in 2021 and 2022.
Cincinnati fans are going to continue to hold out hope that the team can turn things around, but it might already be too late.
