Coming into the 2023 NFL season, the running back position had been massively devalued, with some of the best players in the league at the position wanting to get paid what they’re worth, most notably Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley, and Tony Pollard.
The Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, and Dallas Cowboys weren’t willing to pay the asking prices for these Pro Bowlers, as they desired long-term contract extensions, which none of them got.
This situation seems to have set a precedent for the running back position in the NFL, and it’s possible that another skill position in the league could see something similar happen very soon.
Nick Wright of FOX Sports theorizes that star wide receivers in the league could be in for a rude awakening with so many talented players at the position.
Wright believes that it won’t be the lack of importance, like what may be happening with running backs, but rather the surplus of talent at the position, making it easier to bring in potential stars at the position, via his Twitter account.
Theory I’m working on: There’s a WR salary correction coming, not due to the position losing importance like RBs, but due to their being too many great ones!
Position deeper than ever & ANOTHER loaded draft class coming. In a couple years, there’s gonna be a $ squeeze on them.

This is an interesting theory, as it could end up being the case, with NFL owners always trying to cut corners when it comes to paying their players outside of the quarterback position.
Wright is correct that the talent at the wide receiver is only getting better, with the league potentially seeing the most talented crop of players at the position in league history.
It’ll be interesting to see if this turns out to be the case and whether the players fight back in order to earn the kind of salary that they deserve.
