The San Francisco 49ers are licking their wounds after losing in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in overtime to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
It may have been the greatest Super Bowl in history, but it was their second loss there in five seasons to the Chiefs, which made it sting that much more.
The 49ers now have the feeling of a franchise that cannot go all the way, yet per Dov Kleiman, they’re the very early favorites to win next season’s Vince Lombardi Trophy with +500 odds.

Perhaps oddsmakers still haven’t gotten the memo that it is foolish to bet against Mahomes, but then again, the 49ers were also the slight favorites in Sunday’s big game.
San Francisco has arguably the best roster in the entire NFL, starting with Cinderella quarterback Brock Purdy, who is, at worst, a near-elite signal-caller.
They have talent at just about every position, but at the same time, they do have a couple of holes to fill.
The right side of their offensive line has been an issue for some time now, and they could use help in the secondary, especially on the side opposite of Pro Bowl cornerback Charvarius Ward.
The Niners also have to keep wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who led them in receptions and receiving yards, as he will be a free agent after next season.
They’re well over the salary cap, and they may have to make some difficult decisions in order to keep enough of their core together beyond the 2024 campaign.
