Shohei Ohtani Shines in Cactus League Return
Los Angeles Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani made a dazzling comeback in his Cactus League debut, showcasing his prowess on the field. The reigning National League MVP left a lasting impression by launching a deep home run to left field off the Los Angeles Angels’ Yusei Kikuchi. Despite his impressive performance, Ohtani’s focus seemed to be on his overall well-being after the game.
“Regardless of the results,” Ohtani reflected, “I think the biggest takeaway was being able to go through my three at-bats without any issues.” Following his leadoff homer, Ohtani’s subtle shoulder check post-swing raised eyebrows. He clarified, “I was just checking to make sure it was OK. My last swing felt great, which was a good test.”
In the subsequent at-bats resulting in a pop out and a strikeout, Ohtani’s offseason shoulder surgery did not hinder his performance. “It’s a constant feedback between how I feel and how the swing actually looks,” Ohtani elaborated. “Today was pretty good. I felt like it was pretty consistent with what I felt.”
Preparation for Two-Way Status
Looking ahead, Ohtani is gearing up to reclaim his two-way status and aims to take the mound for the Dodgers in April. With his pitching return on the horizon, adjustments are expected in Ohtani’s offensive role. Dodgers’ manager, Dave Roberts, anticipates a shift in Ohtani’s at-bats and stolen bases to accommodate his pitching responsibilities.
“I don’t think he’s going to get the same number of at-bats, plate appearances, given that he’s going to be pitching,” Roberts projected. “I don’t think he’s going to steal as many bases, just appreciating the fact that he does need to pitch and save his legs. But as far as the kind of performance per plate appearance, I still think he can be just as productive.”
