Transaction Update
The Chicago White Sox have added right-handed pitcher Mike Vasil to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. This move marks the third team change for Vasil since December. To accommodate him on the 40-man roster, the organization moved right-hander Prelander Berroa to the 60-day injured list.
Career Journey and Performance
At 25, Vasil began his professional career as an eighth-round pick by the Mets in 2021. His early progress in the minor leagues saw him rise to being ranked among the top prospects in the organization. In 2023, during his time in Double-A, he posted a 3.71 ERA with a 0.84 WHIP and averaged 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings over 51 innings of work. He later advanced to Triple-A, recording a 4-4 win–loss record with a 5.30 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP in 16 starts. In 2024, his numbers in Triple-A reflected continued challenges, as he finished 8-10 with a 6.04 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 29 appearances.
Waiver Procedure and Financial Implications
Under the current waiver rules, had Vasil cleared waivers instead of being claimed, the Mets would have been given the option to reacquire him for a fee of $50,000. This provision remains applicable for any transaction during the season; only if a player passes through waivers without the original club electing to reacquire can he be assigned outright to the minors.
Outlook Within a Rebuilding Rotation
Joining an organization pressing for improved performance after a historically challenging season, Vasil enters a rotation in need of reliable arms. Despite some struggles in recent outings, his performance in spring training included a notable outing where he delivered three shutout innings, showcasing a display of command and potential. The White Sox will now rely on his development as they look to solidify their pitching staff for the remainder of the season.
